Why?: I would either love to live in a super cute, whimsical world like in Tearaway where I could relax, explore, and cuddle with the other magical creatures ORRRR in Overwatch where I was a badass character with a special superpower (and a super cool outfit) helping protect the world.

As 2016 comes to a close, the closer we are to QGCon!

This week, we’re excited to share T.L. Taylor’s abstract for her academic keynote at QGCon 2017:

Play as Transformative Work

One of the most powerful lessons the qualitative study of digital gaming has afforded us is a deep look at how players encounter games and platforms and, rather than simply accepting them as given, regularly take them and create something else, something more. The overall pattern is one of transformation. Game communities are avid, dynamic interlocutors with the systems they engage. It could not be otherwise – this is fundamentally what culture does.

Live-streaming, where one broadcasts their gameplay in real-time over the internet to others via platforms such as Twitch, has grown tremendously in recent years. It has become one of our most potent current examples of this socio-technical dynamic. Through my research with variety streamers I have been struck by the level of attention, labor, resources, and creativity they put into making an entertainment product that extends well beyond the formal properties of the game being broadcast. Accomplished live-streamers create compelling performances and productions that capture viewers and keep them engaged

SUBMIT YOUR GAME TO THE QGCON ARCADE NOW THROUGH DECEMBER 22!

We’re excited to announce submissions for the 2017 Queerness and Games Conference Arcade (April 1 – 2, 2017) are now being accepted! Submissions will be accepted through December 22, and applicants can expect to be notified by January 14, 2017. See the Call for Games here for full details.

As always, QGCon welcomes sessions that bridge creativity and critique. QGCon attendees come from many fields (academia, activism, the games industry), so accessibility and the opportunity for dynamic engagement is key. While the focus of the event is the intersection of LGBTQ issues and video games, the organizers also welcome game submissions that address race, gender, disability, socio-economic class, and other issues of identity.

What are your favorite games?: Recently I’ve been playing Stardew Valley and Kirby’s Epic Yarn (my partner calls it “Gay Yarn Boy”). Some other favorites are Curtain by Llaura Dreamfeel (shown at QGCon 2014!), and Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure! for Nintendo GameCube.
If you could live in any game world, what would it be? Why?: I would be really excited to live in Kirby’s rent-free apartment in Kirby’s Epic Yarn! The pacifist route of Undertale has a bunch of queer characters and represents nonbinary gender identity, so I could also live in that version of the Underground.

Meet our 2017 academic keynote, T.L. Taylor!

We are thrilled to announce that our 2017 Queerness and Games Conference (April 1 – 2, 2017) academic keynote is renowned game studies scholar T. L. Taylor!

T.L. Taylor is Professor of Comparative Media Studies at MIT. She is a qualitative sociologist (Brandeis University, 2000) who has focused on internet and game studies for over two decades. Her research explores the interrelations between culture, social practice, and technology in online leisure environments.

Her book Raising the Stakes: E-Sports and the Professionalization of Computer Gaming (MIT Press, 2012) chronicles the rise of e-sports and professional computer gaming. She is also the author of Play Between Worlds: Exploring Online Game Culture (MIT Press, 2006) which used her multi-year ethnography of EverQuest to explore issues related to massively multiplayer online games. Ethnography and Virtual Worlds: A Handbook of Method, her co-authored book on doing ethnographic research in online multi-user worlds, was published by Princeton University Press (2012).

She is currently at work on a book about game live-streaming (under contract with Princeton University Press). She also serves as Director of Research for AnyKey, an organization dedicated to supporting and developing fair

Meet our 2017 Design Keynote, John Epler!

We are thrilled to announce that our 2017 Queerness and Games Conference (April 1 – 2, 2017) design keynote is Dragon Age Narrative Lead, John Epler!

 

johnimageJohn’s been playing games since he could first hold a controller. With a degree in English and Film Studies, he entered the gaming industry in 2007, working as a term tester on Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Since then, he’s worked on both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises as a cinematic designer, before settling into his current role as the Narrative Presentation Lead on the Dragon Age franchise.
